One of the 50 entries in the Israeli Defence-AI Deployment Index is classified as military logistics and sustainment, and it is graded L2 · Contract. There is no second entry at any grade, which makes this the thinnest category in the index. Military predictive maintenance AI exists as an Israeli export product, but it exists in the record as one company, not as a sector.
Sustainment is where defence spends most of its money and least of its publicity. That combination produces exactly the result recorded here.
What the index counts as logistics and sustainment
The inclusion test is that a company's core product must be AI or autonomy applied to defence. In sustainment, three things then fall away.
Enterprise logistics software falls away because it is not defence. Depot systems, supply-chain planning tools and maintenance management platforms sold across industries do not qualify, however many military customers they have.
Autonomous resupply vehicles fall away because the index counts them as autonomous ground systems, which is what they are sold as. A reader looking for last-mile delivery robots should start at Israeli autonomous ground and maritime systems.
The primes fall away for the reasons argued in why the Israeli primes are excluded. What is left is the narrow set of companies selling prediction — software that forecasts when a military component will fail — as the product itself. One met the sourcing threshold at version 0.2. L2 · Contract — Odysight.ai
Odysight.ai (founded 2013, Omer, listed on Nasdaq) builds a visual sensing system for predictive maintenance: miniature cameras placed inside machinery, with algorithms interpreting the imagery for diagnostics and prognostics and health management.
The index's source is the company's March 2024 announcement, carried by Nasdaq, of a purchase order from an international defence contractor for its visual-based predictive maintenance system, to be installed in an upgraded Israel Air Force maritime version of the Sikorsky-Lockheed Martin SH-60 Seahawk. In September 2024 the company announced a purchase order agreement exceeding $10 million from a leading international defence contractor, for integration into a new UAV configuration and an existing UAV line. More recently it announced a purchase order from Elbit Systems, on behalf of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, for integration of its prognostics and health management system across several platforms, valued at approximately $0.3 million.
All three are company-issued announcements distributed through financial newswires, which is what a Nasdaq-listed company does with material contract news. In two of the three the buying contractor is unnamed. The index grades Odysight.ai L2 because publicly announced procurement exists and no independent public source describes the system in operational use.
What the distribution shows
A single entry in the category that ought to be the largest addressable market in defence is a striking result, and it has three separate causes worth separating.
Sustainment is slow. Predictive maintenance requires access to platform data, airworthiness or seaworthiness approval, and a long baseline of failures to learn from. That favours whoever already owns the platform relationship, which is the integrator or the prime.
Sustainment is invisible. There is no equivalent of a strike report for a component that did not fail. The absence of an L3 grade here is close to structural: an operator would have to publish an account of a maintenance decision taken on the strength of a prediction, and operators do not.
Sustainment is the primes' territory, and the index cites a specific piece of evidence for that. The UK's Project THESEUS, the Ministry of Defence programme investigating autonomy applied to the ordering, planning and delivery of battlefield supplies, down-selected Israeli primes rather than startups. Raksha Anirveda reported that the Ministry of Defence selected Rafael's AI-based battlefield logistic resupply solution, and separately that Marlborough Communications with Israel Aerospace Industries was awarded a contract to demonstrate a highly automated ground and air resupply network. Janes has reported the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory advancing the programme, and Shephard covered the UK's search for autonomous logistics suppliers. When a Western defence ministry went looking for Israeli autonomy in sustainment, it bought from Rafael and IAI.
The same shape recurs in active protection and targeting and fire control, and the three are treated together in three categories came back almost bare.
What would change it
An L3 for Odysight.ai would require a named public source reporting a military using the system operationally. The likeliest form is an air force or navy sustainment publication describing condition-based maintenance on a named platform with an identified supplier. That is a real genre of publication, which makes this a more reachable L3 than in most thin categories.
A second entry would change the category more fundamentally. The obvious candidates are fleet-analytics companies serving aviation or heavy vehicles that pick up a defence customer, and the index would grade any such entrant on the same test as everyone else.
Named customers would also strengthen what is already there. Two of the three Odysight.ai announcements describe the buyer only as an international defence contractor. A named contractor, or a published prime-level supplier disclosure, would turn a verifiable announcement into a traceable one, which is the distinction at the centre of the deployment evidence gap.
Limits of this reading
One entry describes one company. It does not describe Israeli military sustainment, which is a large field conducted mostly inside the primes, inside the Ministry of Defense and inside the services themselves.
The index holds no data on prediction accuracy, false-alarm rates, installed base or in-service performance, and does not assess any of them. It cannot see maintenance contracting that is unannounced, and in sustainment that is likely to be most of it. The thinness recorded on this page is a description of what has been published about a narrow slice of a large problem, and should not be read as anything more.
