Israeli Autonomous Air Systems: Contracts, Trials and Claims

Seven companies in the Israeli Defence-AI Deployment Index build autonomous or operator-guided air systems. Three are graded L3, two L2, one L1 and one L0. Three documented operational deployments out of seven is the highest proportion in the index, and it makes Israeli autonomous drone companies the category where the public record is thickest — largely because loitering munitions and small tactical drones attract defence reporting that base-security equipment does not.

The category spans two distinct products: small drones that carry a warhead, and small drones that carry a camera and a control stack. The index grades both on the same test, set out in the published grading rules.

L3 · Operational: three with reported military use

UVision Air builds the Hero family of loitering munitions. Janes reported the IDF using the company's mini loitering munition. Janes is a defence-intelligence publisher rather than a general outlet, and the report addresses use rather than acquisition, which is what separates this grade from the one below. The sourcing is set out in the UVision Air record. Definitions matter in this product class and are unpacked in loitering munitions and attack drones.

XTEND (2018, Tel Aviv) builds operator-guided autonomy for small drones, where the operator sets an intent and the software flies the platform. Ynet reported on the company's systems and business. Separately, The Defense Post reported in November 2025 that XTEND would supply the United States with attack-drone kits, and the company announced through PR Newswire a US Department of War contract for a modular close-quarters kit produced in Tampa, Florida. eyesAtop (2015) builds control software that lets one operator manage several drones at once. Calcalist's Ctech reported on the company in a defence-technology context that describes use rather than intent. The reasoning behind the grade is set out in the eyesAtop record.

L2 · Contract: two Israeli autonomous drone companies with orders

SpearUAV (2017, Tel Aviv) makes encapsulated drones and loitering munitions launched from a tube, a vehicle or a vessel. Janes reported contracts for the company's loitering munitions, and EDR Magazine reported a $20 million contract for VIPER 300 systems from a customer the announcement did not name. Leonardo DRS announced a teaming arrangement with the company for nano-scale aerial munitions aimed at the US market. Real orders, no published account of use.

Steadicopter (2005, Yokneam Illit) builds the Black Eagle unmanned helicopter. Naval Today reported that the Israeli Navy selected the electric variant. A named service and a named platform sit behind the entry. What has not been published is any report of the aircraft flying an operational task for that customer, which is the L3 threshold.

L1 · Trial: one at demonstration stage

Wonder Robotics (2019, Tel Aviv) builds autonomous landing software. Israel Hayom reported in November 2025 on technology allowing drones to land autonomously in rough sea conditions. The report describes a demonstrated capability rather than a purchase, and the index grades demonstrations L1 regardless of how difficult the demonstration is. That distinction is deliberate: the index measures published evidence of fielding, not technical difficulty.

L0 · Claimed: one thin record

Aerodrome appears in a March 2026 report by The Defense Post covering EagleNXT investment into autonomous-systems companies. The material is about capital, not about a customer. No independent public source names a military buyer or a military user of the company's product.

Funding is the most common thing mistaken for deployment evidence in this category, and the index treats the two as unrelated. The point is argued in funding stage is not deployment evidence.

What the distribution shows

Three of seven at L3 is roughly double the index-wide rate. Two forces are behind that. Loitering munitions are reported on by specialist defence publishers with sources inside armed forces, so their use surfaces in print more often than most defence software. And small tactical drones are visible: they are carried by infantry, seen by journalists and photographed, so operational use becomes reportable in a way that a data-fusion server never does.

The L2 pair shows the other half of the pattern. Both SpearUAV and Steadicopter have publicly announced procurement, and in Steadicopter's case a publicly named service. Neither has a published account of the platform performing an operational task. The gap between "a navy bought it" and "a navy used it" is exactly the gap the index was built to record, and it recurs across all fifty entries in the deployment evidence gap.

Two further observations follow from the sourcing. First, the American market is now a significant part of this category's public record: XTEND's Department of War kit contract and the Leonardo DRS arrangement with SpearUAV are both US-facing. Second, three of the seven sources above are company-issued announcements rather than reporting, and each is flagged as such on the entry.

What would change it

Steadicopter would move to L3 on any published report — from the Israeli Navy, a defence ministry statement or a named outlet — describing the Black Eagle flying an operational task rather than being selected. SpearUAV would move on a comparable report from any of its customers, though the undisclosed-customer structure of its announcements makes that unlikely to originate with the buyer.

Wonder Robotics would move from L1 to L2 on a first dated order announcement. Aerodrome would move from L0 to L2 on the same, and the announcement would not need to name the customer, only to state that an order exists and what its scope is. Limits of this reading

The index does not link any product in this category to a named strike, operation or casualty event, even where press reporting has done so. It records that a source reported military use, and stops there. It holds no performance data: no range, no endurance, no accuracy, no autonomy level verified by any third party.

Coverage is English-language only, which understates companies selling exclusively into the Israeli market. And a loitering munition graded L2 may well have been used; the index records only that nobody has published it. The full index and inclusion test set out the boundaries.

Which Israeli drone companies have documented operational use?

UVision Air, XTEND and eyesAtop are the three autonomous air-systems entries graded L3. Janes reported the IDF using UVision's mini loitering munition; Ynet reported on XTEND's systems; Calcalist's Ctech reported on eyesAtop. Each grade rests on a source independent of the company.

Does a US Department of War contract count as operational deployment?

Not on its own. XTEND's announced US contract for attack-drone kits is a procurement fact and would support an L2 grade by itself. The company's L3 grade rests on separate reporting of its systems in use, not on the contract announcement.

Why is Wonder Robotics graded L1 despite a working demonstration?

The index grades published evidence of fielding, not technical difficulty. Israel Hayom reported autonomous drone landings in rough sea conditions, which is a demonstrated capability rather than a purchase or an operational task, and demonstrations are graded L1.
