Israeli Defence-Tech Landscape Maps Compared

Published counts of the Israeli defence-tech sector range from about 160 companies to 334, and the gap is mostly definitional rather than factual. Any Israeli defence tech landscape map is a claim about who belongs in a category, made by a publisher with a purpose. This guide sets out what the main published projects actually measure, why their totals diverge, and the one thing none of them attempts.

What each Israeli defence tech landscape map measures

Startup Nation Central — Israel Defense Tech Landscape Map. The most widely cited of the group, published by a non-profit that tracks Israeli innovation and hosted on its Finder platform. The first version launched in July 2024 with roughly 160 companies. Calcalist's CTech reported the updated map listing 312 companies across defence, aerospace and homeland security; the Finder edition of the 2025 Aerospace, Defense and HLS map carries 334 active companies. The unit of analysis is the company, sorted by product category, with funding and stage data attached from Finder's underlying database. Its evident purpose is ecosystem visibility for investors and partners.

Meshconomy — Israel Defense Tech Landscape Map. An interactive map hosted at defensetech.meshconomy.com and presented as part of an Israel–US Tech Alliance. It publishes several views of the same population, including an "Israel's Defense Tech Innovation Landscape" cut, and adds analytics and matchmaking features. Its stated purpose is narrower and more transactional than Startup Nation Central's: connecting Israeli companies to US government requirements, primes and investors. That purpose shapes the inclusion rule, since a company with no plausible US route is less useful to the map.

Defense-Tech Map (defensetechmap.com). A standing web project that maps the defence-tech ecosystem and also publishes a set of global defence maps. It is included here because it is genuinely published and genuinely used, but with a caveat that belongs in the open: searching did not surface a verifiable statement of who publishes it. A map whose publisher cannot be identified should be treated as a lead-generation tool rather than as a source, whatever the quality of its contents.

Viola — Israel's DefenseTech Leaders. Published by the Viola investment group and covered by CTech, this is a list of more than 70 founders, executives, officials and ecosystem figures rather than a company map. The unit of analysis is the person. It answers a question the company maps do not — who is building this — and cannot substitute for a supplier directory.

IVC Research Center and LeumiTech — Israeli Tech Review. Quarterly and annual reviews of Israeli technology funding, reported alongside Bank Leumi's tech arm. The unit here is capital, not companies: rounds, totals and sector shares. Used carefully, these are the best available check on whether a defence-tech map's growth reflects new companies or new self-identification.

Why the totals differ

Four mechanisms explain almost all of the spread between 160 and 334.

Category boundary. "Defence tech" and "aerospace, defence and homeland security" are not the same population. Adding homeland security and dual-use civil aviation pulls in hundreds of companies whose military business may be marginal or aspirational.

Self-identification. Reporting on the Startup Nation Central update attributed the increase in part to a growing number of startups self-identifying as defence tech. A map that accepts self-identification will grow faster than the underlying sector does, particularly during a period when defence capital is abundant.

Timing. The July 2024 baseline and the 2025 and 2026 editions bracket a period of unusually fast formation. Comparing a 2024 count to a 2026 count is comparing two different moments, not two different methods.

Purpose. An investor-facing map benefits from breadth. A map built to route companies toward US programmes benefits from filtering. Neither is wrong; they are answering different questions.

What every one of these maps leaves out

None of them grades deployment. That is not an oversight. A landscape map is organised by product category and annotated with funding stage, which is an investor's frame, and it is a good frame for the question it was built to answer. It tells a reader that a company closed a Series B. It does not tell a procurement officer whether the product has left the demonstration tent, and the reasons funding and fielding come apart are set out in funding stage is not deployment evidence.

This is the gap the Israeli Defence-AI Deployment Index was built for. It covers 50 companies rather than 334, applies a narrower inclusion test, and grades each on the strongest publicly published evidence that the system has been procured or used, using four evidence grades. Thirteen of the 50 reach the top grade. The distribution, and what it implies, is examined in the deployment evidence gap.

The trade-off runs both ways and should be stated plainly. The landscape maps have far better coverage of the sector than the index does. The index has something the maps do not attempt: a citable source for every entry.

How to use a map and an evidence index together

A workable sequence for a buyer.

  1. Use a landscape map for discovery. Start with Startup Nation Central for breadth; use Meshconomy if a US contracting route matters to you.
  2. Read the map's inclusion rule and publication date before using its total for anything.
  3. Take the shortlist into an evidence check. For each company, find the strongest independent published source describing procurement or use, following the method in how to verify a defence AI vendor's deployment claims.
  4. Compare what you find against a graded baseline. The 13 companies with documented operational use and the full 50-entry index show what the different tiers of evidence look like in practice.
  5. Where the public record is thin, put the question to the vendor in writing rather than dropping the company.

Limits of this reading

This comparison covers published maps that could be verified by name and publisher. Others certainly exist, including internal maps circulated by funds and primes that are not public, and Hebrew-language directories that English-language search under-represents; that bias is discussed in the English-language bias in Israeli defence-tech research.

Company counts on all of these projects move. Every figure here is attached to a dated source and should be re-checked rather than quoted forward. And nothing in this piece assesses the accuracy of any map's individual entries — only what each project set out to measure and what it did not.
